My Favorite Ted Talks of 2015

2015 has definitely been the year of learning for me. It has had it’s ups and downs but I can honestly say that I am glad that I experienced it all because of how these experiences helped make me who I am today. Ted talks are another great way to learn a little more each and every day.

Ted talks are a bit sentimental to me. One of my favorite teachers used to have us do presentations based on our favorite Ted talks. At first it felt like a chore but I ended up really enjoying searching for one to present and found myself watching lots more long after the class ended!  These Ted talks are the ones that I feel really had an impact on me this year, in 2015.

  1. Why I Live A Zero Waste Life – Lauren Singer

I actually just watched this talk recently. One of my favorite blogs, Refinery29 has a YouTube channel with a series called Try Living with Lucie. The series follows their video producer, Lucie Fink as she tries a different lifestyle change for 5 days each week. Their most recent video was 5 Days of Zero Trash. I was amazed by how much trash Lucie was able to avoid throw using. Lauren Singer is an eco friendly blogger who helped teach Lucie how to live a zero trash lifestyle. After watching the video I remembered seeing in my subscription box a while back with her in it, giving a Ted talk. I then watched her Ted talk and loved her message! While I highly doubt I’ll ever amount to having just a mason jar of trash after 3 years, Lauren has definitely inspired me to try to use less trash and be more eco friendly!

2.How Reading Affects Creativity and Critical Thinking – Hana Saleh

This talk is a bit on longer than the others but I really enjoyed listening to it.I love how she discussed her different ideas of how to help kids get more out of their classes and education. Growing up I enjoyed reading for pleasure but not so much for school. Hana conveys her message in such an intelligent way that is really interesting.

3. What Internet Trolls Taught Me – Hannah Witton

Hannah Witton is one of my favorite YouTubers ever, so when she told her audience in a video announcement that she had done a Ted talk I was overjoyed! This talk started out with Hannah telling us the story of how she started out on YouTube and transitioned into us learning about how she deals with sexist comments and misogyny on YouTube. Even though Hannah and I live very different lives I honestly found her talk to be so inspiring!

Do you like watching Ted talks? If so, let me know what some of your favorites are below!

The Taste of Fayetteville Festival

Recently my mom and I went to a local food festival that showcased all the independent restaurants in our area. I had only read about it the night before online and honestly only went because I wanted something to do. We actually ended up having a lot of fun!

Top – TJ Maxx( similar), Jeans – Lauren Conrad; Kohls, Bag – Old Navy( similar), Shoes – Jack Rogers, Necklace – Earthbound Trading, Tumbler – Michaels; Betsey Johnson

Now as cute as this outfit is wearing my Jacks was a huge mistake! It had rained the night before so the grass was super muddy! So now my favorite pair of sandals that are worth over a hundred dollars are covered in mud. Yeah, I’m still kicking myself in the foot over that one.

Other than the muddy grass, we actually ended up having really good weather. It was so warm and sunny the entire day!

Literally, all of the food samples were so good! As someone who is pescatarian, I was worried my options would be limited but that was certainly not the case.

One of the first places we went to was one of the more mainstream restaurants. On the Border served us this hard taco with salsa and Mexican rice. My favorite thing about this dish was surprisingly the rice. It was really good! In the past, I have found seasoned Mexican rice dishes to be too strong but this one was just right.

This tomato pie was hands down my favorite dish! Tomatoes are one of my favorite vegetables so when I saw that this was being served I knew I had to give it a try. This pie basically consists of tomatoes, mayonnaise, inside a warm cheddar biscuit. It was so seriously so good! I was literally scraping the container for more!

This root beer from The Mash House Brewing Company was so good! This was my first time trying real root beer and I must say I am a fan! It was very strong so I had to take little sips. I would definitely drink this again!

This was my first time going to this type of festival. I went in thinking I would have an ok experience. I ended up having a great experience and will gladly go again next year!

The Annual Greek Festival at the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church

This past Friday, my mom and I went to the Greek Festival that is held every year at the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church. This festival is held every year. This was our second time going and I was definitely far from disappointed!

Necklace – Earthbound Trading, Top – Express(no longer sold but similar), Shorts – TJ Maxx (similar), Shoes – Jack Rogers, Purse – Old Navy

The food was so good. I didn’t get any of the gyro wraps, because I am pescatarian. I will say that the last time we went to the festival I got a gyro wrap and it was delicious! pizza was so good as well as the fries.

After eating my pizza and fries, I got a Greek frappe. It didn’t taste anything like the Starbucks frappuccinos I am used to but it was so sweet and good! You could really taste the coffee and all of the flavors mixed into it.

After food and frappes, we went to see the inside of the church. The church looked so beautiful! I had never seen the inside of a Greek church before so this experience was very new to me but so cool.

So overall, I had a really great experience at the Greek Festival. If you guys are looking for some fun events to go to in your local area, I highly recommend . Eventbrite is a website that helps you find fun events in your local area. It is also great for if you are looking for something to do on a vacation if you are new to the area and not sure where to go to find fun or good food. It’s a really great website. I definitely don’t live in a big city but when I searched my location tons of events came up!They also have these great event management tools that can help you plan and promote your own event!

What I’ve Been Listening To – March 2015

So, if you didn’t already know, I love music! I listen to music literally all the time! Rap, Pop, Indie, Acoustic, you name it I’ll listen to it! Although I’m not personally talented in the music department, I have a huge appreciation for the art of it.

I’ve seen a lot of people online start doing this thing where they make monthly playlists. So, I thought I would start making some monthly playlists as well.  These playlists are basically like virtual diaries of what our musical tastes are at this moment in time. I think it will be really interesting when I look back on these monthly playlists 5, 10, maybe even 15 years later, seeing what kind of music I used to listen to when I was younger.

The 5 artists that are listed below are the musicians whose music I have really enjoyed listening to throughout this month. Many of their songs are featured on my playlist. I have been listening to their songs non-stop these past few weeks. I highly recommend that you all listen to all of them and their most recent songs and albums.

Logic – Now although I am a huge fan of rap music,(Rick Ross is the boss! Cool? No? Ok, I’ll stop trying) I usually tend to stick to my traditional favorites when I listen to my usual genre of choice, but Logic, ooh Logic! His lyrics speak to me on a whole other level! I love relatable his songs are despite how unusual and out of the ordinary his story is. Listening to Logic’s music is like listening to beautiful poetry and an intense love story. Yet, this love story isn’t just about a girl it’s a love for life and all the crazy things that come with it.

Drake – If you don’t know who Drake is where in the world have you been? Well don’t worry darling because I will take care of you( you see what I did there? With his lyrics? Cute? Clever? No? Ok…). His new album If You’re Reading this It’s Too Late is amazing! It’s not so good that I would say it is one of my all time favorite albums but it is definitely up there and very well made. The album is basically about how he sees the world differently now that he has made it big in the music industry, because of things like how much money he now has and now people treat him differently now.

Oh Wonder – This group I found out about through one of my favorite YouTubers, Arden Rose. Not only is she absolutely gorgeous( like seriously I’m turning gay just looking at her!) but her sarcastic personality and dry sense of humor makes her videos even better than they are. She has an app that keeps her viewers, or as she likes to call them Rose Buds, on all her social media links and just everything she has been up to.Their song, The Rain  came up on her app’s feed one day so I thought I would give it a listen. I instantly fell in love! Their sound is so unique and their voices intertwine so beautifully it’s insane! They also are releasing a new song at the beginning of every month which is definitely something to look forward to considering how talented they are. The only problem? This makes it even harder to wait for their first full album that comes out in September!

Nicki Minaj – I have been a dedicated fan of the Pink Barbie ever since Pink Friday! Her story is super inspiring and her rap skills are on point! Her new album Pink Print is so well done and so her! It has the perfect balance between serious heart felt tracks and fun tracks. My personal favorite is Only, which features, Drake, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown. The song is basically Nicki saying that she doesn’t care what the tabloids say about her because she knows who she is and she isn’t afraid to be sexy in public because this is the real her and the only her. As if we didn’t have enough reasons to look up to her as a POC feminist role model!

Loyle Carner – I found out about this artist through another one of my favorite YouTubers, Meowitslucy. Not only are her videos so well made and unique but her music taste is incredible! We like a lot of the same artists. This is probably why I am absolutely obsessed with keeping up with what she has been listening to on her Soundcloud! Loyle’s musical style is so jazzy and upbeat! Yet, it can also be very somber and slow at times. You can really tell that he truly takes the time to put so much effort and evoke every emotion in his body in what he creates! His voice and songs have a very beachy vibe to them, but I also feel that the songs are appropriate for so many other locations and occasions as well.

As well as listening to the artists that are already in my playlist I am constantly adding more great artists and songs as I continue to find them throughout the month of March. So make sure to follow me on Soundcloud and check out the rest of my March Playlist to stay updated on what I am listening to!

A Surprise Snow Day

Coat – Kohls – Craft and Barrow

Leggings – Target

Boots – JcPenney – Arizona Jean Co.

Last night it snowed for the first ( and probably last ) time this year! I just couldn’t resist taking some photos and sharing them with you all! Now I know what you Northerners are probably thinking! I know this is like summer for a lot you reading this but for North Carolina this is considered to be a very large amount of snow. I seriously can not get over how pretty the snow is!
